My mom was Mike’s French teacher at Athens. I got to meet Mike briefly one day in her class. I was a freshman and he was a senior. I remember his big smile and how he was talking about prom.

Then I remember later one morning when I was brushing my teeth before school, my mom told me there had been a terrible accident. Her face was red. She told me what happened to Mike and Andy and Ashley. I remember the feeling of being punched in the gut – my heart breaking for Mike and his family and Andy and Ashley and their families and friends.

It’s a decision to drink and drive. Even a single shot of liquor or a glass of wine. It is NEVER worth the risk. Not for your life – not for any lives.

My heart breaks again for the children killed and the others injured. I pray for their families and friends. We need to do better.
