For Children, What Can Beat Love Of Uncle?
This week, my nephews arrive from overseas. I will greet them with presents. I will whisk them to the new Harry Potter movie. I will take them shopping for books and will ask, as we ride in the car, if they want to stop for ice cream.
The world will be theirs, if I have anything to do with it. During our Thanksgiving visit, I will be all over them. I will rub their hair, lift them up, and promise they are “my two favorite nephews.”
There are, of course, only two of them.
FOR THE FIRST TIME, MATT MILLEN FINDS HIMSELF ON A LOSING TEAM…”IT’S MIND-BOGGLING FOR ME”
It is just after 6 in the morning, still dark outside. A lonely light comes from the ground floor office of the Pontiac Silverdome. If you drive slowly enough, you can see him in there, through the huge glass window. Matt Millen, behind his desk, already hovered over...
TRASH OR PIGSKIN, SCHLESINGER HAULS IT
Every week, when he takes out the trash, Cory Schlesinger does something most regular folk — let alone most NFL running backs — never bother to do. He straightens up. Makes things neat around the cans. Lids on tight. No loose paper. This way, the trash...
Patriotism is No Excuse for Stupidity
As reporters go, Seymour Hersh is not only famous but also pretty darn reliable. He won a Pulitzer Prize during the Vietnam War. He broke the story of the My Lai massacre. When he writes, people listen.
Recently, he and I were on a radio show together. I asked him about his latest piece for the New Yorker in which he reported that the first real U.S. commando effort in Afghanistan had gone badly and that the Taliban — thanks partly to an ill-advised, overly noisy U.S. effort — had fired upon a dozen of our elite soldiers, seriously wounding several of them.
IN THE END, THE D’BACKS GET WHAT THEY DESERVE
PHOENIX — Hot winds blew over the Arizona desert Sunday afternoon, so strong they closed the airport for a stretch, as the sands kicked up into a blinding storm. It was not, however, the weather behind those gusts. We know that now. Those were the angry winds of...
Dr. Dre Isn’T A Defender Of Anything
Editor’s note: This column contains lyrics that could be offensive. But the Free Press thinks they’re important to understand the columnist’s view.
Hip, hip, hooray for Dr. Dre! He sure showed those bullies who is boss. He’s a champion for the First Amendment! A hero for freedom of speech!
Let’s pause for some Dre lyrics.
I don’t give a f— about the bitch Because I don’t give a f—! And I don’t give a f—!
HOWARD’S OLD MAGIC COULD DO LIONS GOOD
It was a pass, a long pass, to the corner of the end zone. The receiver broke free and hauled it in for a touchdown. The crowd roared. The receiver smiled. His name was Desmond Howard, and this was the way it was always supposed to be.But it has not been that way. Not...
