Morris Carries The Ball For A Whole Generation

PASADENA, Calif. — When they were kids, Jamie Morris and his brothers and sisters would sneak up to the attic and go through their parents’ memories. One day they found a helmet. And a foreign flag, dog tags and C rations.

From Vietnam.

“Did you ever kill anybody?” a five-year-old Jamie once asked his father.

“Yes,” said Earl Morris, who had fought as a Green Beret. “Yes, son, I did.”

The Coach And The Qb: Schembechler, Harbaugh Have A Special Relationship

PASADENA — Uh-oh. Death before this. That’s what was racing through Jim Harbaugh’s brain the first time he threw a pass in a Michigan practice. It wasn’t a bad pass. Not for a nine-year- old. The problem was neither he nor the football was supposed to be there. Harbaugh was the son of a Wolverine assistant coach, Jack Harbaugh, and he was playing on the sidelines with the other coaches’ sons, and his pass accidently flew out into the middle of the big boys’ practice and when he heard the whistle shriek there was only one question left to be answered.

She was running in a college race and she was losing and she was frustrated and suddenly she ran out of the stadium with eight laps to go, ran down a main street, “apologized to God” and leaped off the bridge. She was trying to kill herself. She failed. She landed in a soggy marsh 35 feet below and lay there, paralyzed, until somebody found her.

No sadder stories. There can be no sadder stories. That is all I thought when this happened six months ago in Indianapolis. It is all I think even today, the day after Christmas.

Jack Morris’ Turn To Earn Winds Up Going In A Circle

So, in other words, he could still be a Detroit Tiger. That’s what we get from Jack Morris’ one-week tour of America.

He went to the Minnesota Twins and they turned him down. He went to the New York Yankees, and they were lukewarm. So he offered that which has never been offered before:

A one-year deal, subject to arbitration.

Which means this: Morris gives a figure, George Steinbrenner gives a figure, and a bozo with a degree on his wall decides which is fair. This has never been tried with a team that did not previously employ the player.
