Of All The Mistakes, Fontes’ Takes Cake
The quarterback was so hot, steam was coming from his head. He crossed his arms. He glared at his coach. He was in the building physically, but in his mind, he was packing his suitcase.
Congratulations, Wayne Fontes. Of all the boneheaded moves you have made with the Lions, this one tops the pile.
ANDY’S DANDY IN PINSTRIPES
ATLANTA — Andy Pettitte looks like a character out of “The Lords of Flatbush” — dark wavy hair, sunken eyes, thick lips, heavy stubble. He looks like a guy who would watch the Yankees, who would adore the Yankees, who would dream one day of...
Series Would Be Better Off With Puckett, Not Straw
ATLANTA — This won’t make me any friends in New York, but I’ll say it anyhow. I don’t like seeing Yankees outfielder Darryl Strawberry in this World Series. It rubs me the wrong way.
LEYRITZ’S BOMB HEATS UP SERIES
ATLANTA — You would think, on a night this chilly, that Mark Wohlers would bring the heat. He was throwing fastballs near 100 m.p.h., fast enough to take the head off a scarecrow — maybe even a live player, if he stood there for it — and he had Jim...
Cone Shouldered Yankees’ Load
ATLANTA — The plane sat on the tarmac, stuck in limbo, and the man who would have to save the World Series for the New York Yankees sat inside it, feeling the beads of sweat starting to form.
“How long?” he wanted to know.
Maybe a half-hour, he was told. Maybe hours. No way to tell. Computer problem.
“Computer problem?” he thought.
He envisioned every travel nightmare you can think of. Flight gets canceled. Back-up flight gets canceled. He spends the rest of night wandering around an airport . . .
“Wait a minute.”
October Song Cecil’S Anthem
NEW YORK — Here was Cecil Fielder, standing in the batting cage before a World Series game. He took five swings, three of which sent balls into the outfield seats. Fans cheered each blast. The air was breezy and the night was cool.
October.
Fielder jogged out of the cage and was grabbed by Reggie Jackson, now a Yankees adviser, who whispered a few ideas into Cecil’s ear. Cecil smiled. He was talking to Reggie.
October.
BLOWOUT IN THE BRONXTEEN ANGEL’S HOME RUNS BEDEVIL YANKS
NEW YORK — The moon hung low in the dark Bronx sky, beaming down proudly on the lights of Yankee Stadium. Fans draped over the railings, cheering every hopeful crack of their heroes’ bats. Music blasted through the loudspeakers. Highlight footage flashed...
Murder Trial Reveals The Evils Of Talk Tv
I’ve been on a few TV talk shows. This is how they work. You sit in a room, waiting to go on, and a person comes in to encourage you and the other guests to keep things “lively.” This person is often a young, good-looking production assistant, smartly dressed, with an air of having done this a million times before.
He or she will smile a lot, and use words such as “fast- paced” and
“excitement” and “have fun out there” and “keep it moving.”
What they are saying, without ever saying it, is “don’t be boring.”
At no time do they say, “Be careful.”
