AUGUSTA, Ga. — So here is what the 1991 Masters came down to: the final hole, the final round, three of the biggest names in golf tied for the lead — and all three totally disgusted with themselves. Jose-Maria Olazabal was scowling in the sand, already his second bunker of this hole. Tom Watson, playing behind, had just watched his tee shot sail into the pine needles off the 18th fairway. And Ian Woosnam, all 5-feet-4 1/ 2 inches, had followed Watson with a blast into the crowd, so far left of the fairway, he needed a traffic cop get him to his ball.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — I know what you’re saying. Golf? He’s covering golf? And I admit, it’s a stretch, because I cannot play golf, not really, not unless you count throwing the ball, picking it up, and throwing it again, which I once did, just for...

ST. LOUIS — Steve Yzerman sat on the bed in his hotel room and looked at his watch. The bus would not leave for 20 minutes, but he already was dressed in his blue sport coat and tie. His shirt collar was tight and stuck out. His hair was mussed. He folded his hands uncomfortably across his lap. With his boyish face, he looked like a school kid waiting for the car pool.
“Last year at this time, we weren’t even in the playoffs,” he said, staring at the TV. “I was skating down at Joe Louis Arena when the playoffs began for everybody else.”

A bullet is a bullet, it has no heart, shows no emotion. It follows orders, like a good soldier, and when it enters the flesh, spitting blood, killing the body, it has merely done its job. No remorse. No reward. In that way, a bullet is much purer than the people who...

I must admit, I was a little worried when the Red Wings traded Joey Kocur a few weeks ago. After all, hockey is a tough sport. And in giving up Kocur, the Wings were giving up one of the toughest guys around.
I don’t want to say Joey spent a lot of time punching opponents. I will say I once looked at him and said, “Hey, nice leather gloves.”
“Those are my hands,” he said.
