I have a friend in Boston. He is very successful. Whenever I visit him, he picks me up at the Boston airport and it is always crowded and we drive on the Boston expressway which is always crowded and we go to a Boston restaurant and wait for a table because it, too, is crowded, and he talks about the new hotels and the new office buildings and theater and concerts and blah, blah, blah, and so I take the ketchup and dump it in his lap. Because the point is this: Boston is getting too big for its own good.
Which is where Detroit comes in.

First let me say that Isiah Thomas is quick and smart and warm and funny and an extremely talented basketball player who deserves everything he gets. So I am not surprised his face is on the front of Coke cans, and that he has just signed with a local TV station.
It is the path of success: Isiah Thomas, the man. Isiah Thomas, the TV star. Isiah Thomas, the endorsement spokesman.
Isiah Thomas, the horse.
The horse?

I’ve been hearing a lot of talk lately about the apathy of Tigers fans.
The Tigers, as we know, are in first place in the AL East. Yet, critics claim, you couldn’t tell it by the crowds at Tiger Stadium. According to recent league attendance statistics, you’d think they were showing old movies down at Michigan and Trumbull. Detroit ranks 15th out of 26 teams.
Sunday at Tiger Stadium was Autograph Day. It was also Sun Visor Day. It was also a day Jack Morris pitched, and a wonderful, warm summer afternoon.
The attendance was 35,977.

ROSEMONT, Ill. — All right. Quit laughing. So I swore I’d never attend another Arena Football Game. So what? This was the championship, for Pete’s sake. And a Detroit team was in it. Where’s your spirit?

As a normal American citizen, I worry about many things. Taxes. World peace. What Michael Jackson did with his other glove. I do not worry about Jack Morris. Worrying about Morris has become fashionable of late. So far this season, Morris, the Tigers’ star...

PAMPLONA, Spain — They were running toward us, hundreds of men, their faces filled with horror because the bulls were right behind them. I looked anxiously at Pablo, my Spanish guide, whom I had met just hours before in the drunken streets of Pamplona. He had promised me, in broken English: “You run with me, you no die.”
It was a comforting thought.
And suddenly we took off. Somebody screamed. A man next to me went down and was trampled. I glanced to my right and saw a black bull just three feet away. “This is it, this is it, this is it,” I heard myself say. . . .

WIMBLEDON, England — Martina Navratilova was getting slapped around, pounded, humiliated on Centre Court. Every serve from Steffi Graf drew blood, every forehand doubled her over, she was reeling, she lost nine games in a row — nine in a row? She never...

WIMBLEDON, England — It was like turning to the final page of the fairy tale, only to find the page was ripped out of the book. Chris Evert, whom the whole crowd — perhaps the whole world — wanted to win this tennis match Thursday, was standing alone...
